DR. ROBERT COHEN, M.D., CCFP, SOMNOLOGIST (ESRS)

Dr. Cohen received his MD from Dalhousie University in 1998 and completed his Family Medicine training at the University of Alberta. He holds the designation Somnologist – Expert in Sleep Medicine from the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS). He practiced a broad scope of community-based Family Medicine prior to joining the Centre for Sleep & Human Performance in 2006, where he provides comprehensive care of all sleep disorders.

DR. Claudio Soares, MD, PhD, FRCPC, MBA

Dr. Soares trained as a psychiatrist at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, where he earned his medical degree and completed his Ph.D. work on estrogen effects for the management of depression in midlife women. He later completed a postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School where he served as Assistant Professor before relocating to Canada. In 2004, Dr. Soares was recruited by McMaster University to lead its Women’s Mental Health Program and later on the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Division. He joined Queen’s University in 2016, where he served as Department Chair for 6 years.

Dr. Soares’ research has focused on the design and implementation of clinical trials in depression, with a primary focus on novel hormonal and non-hormonal options for menopausal women experiencing mood and anxiety disorders, vasomotor symptoms, and sleep problems. His most recent research interest includes the use of digital health technologies for treatment monitoring and relapse prevention in depression, and the role of psychedelics for the management of psychiatric disorders.

DR. Vivien Brown, MDCM, CCFP, FCFP, MSCP

Dr. Vivien Brown is a family physician and author in Toronto. Educated at McGill University, she currently is appointed to the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, holding the rank of Assistant Professor. An award winner for teaching on many levels, her major interests are in the area of health promotion and prevention for women, and continuing medical education, Adult Immunization and Vaccine Preventable Illness. The College of Family Physicians of Ontario named Dr Brown “Physician of the Year for the Region of Toronto”, awarded November 2012. Canada. She is the Past President of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada and is immediate past Vice President for North America for the Medical Women’s International Association. Recently she was named one of Canada’s most influential women by the organization Women of Influence, for her work on advocacy on HPV vaccine for Canadians.

In March 2017, she was honored to present HPV initiatives in Canada at the UN meetings for the Commission on the Status of Women. In 2018 she was honored with the Media Award from the North American Menopause Society for her work in Women’s Health. She also received the May Cohen Award from the Federation of Medical Women of Canada for her work in Women’s Health. In September 2024 she received the Reproductive Health Award for her work in Women’s health and was awarded the King Charles III Coronation medal for her work in the community. Most recently, August 2025, the College of Family Physicians of Ontario awarded Dr. Brown a Certificate of Distinction for her level of devotion and patient care.

DR. Jennifer Hirsch MD, FRCPC

Dr. Hirsch is a Psychiatrist, Sleep Specialist, and Lecturer at the University of Toronto with a focus on patient care and medical education. Based at MedSleep Clinic in Toronto, she treats a wide range of sleep disorders, including insomnia, hypersomnolence, sleep-related breathing disorders, and movement disorders, and supervises fellows in sleep medicine. She leads the Perinatal Mindfulness Meditation Program at Mount Sinai Hospital and facilitates a postpartum psychotherapy group. Dr. Hirsch has contributed to Ontario Health quality improvement initiatives in insomnia and menopause care, and regularly presents to both academic and public audiences on sleep, mindfulness, and reproductive mental health.
